SAT Critical-Reading - Author Point of View

Author Point of View questions test your ability to determine what the author's point of view is, based on the information contained in the passage.  These questions are not the same as fact questions, which simply ask you what arguments the author makes in the passage.  You have to take the information a step further here, and determine what else the author would agree with based on the arguments made in the passage and the information the author includes in the passage.

Some examples of Author Point of View questions include:

  • Based on the passage, the author is most likely to agree with which of the following:
  • Which of the following ideas would the author of passage one be most likely to agree with:
  • The author of passage 1 would most likely disagree with the author of passage two about:
  • The author of passage 2 would probably respond to the author's point about spiders in line 5 with which of the following arguments

In each of these questions, you are being asked to determine how the author thinks or feels about an issue, based on what the author has written.  There will be clear evidence in the passage that helps you to know exactly how the author feels about the situation in question, but the passage will not come right out and say how the author feels about that issue- you will have to be able to take the information a step further and infer how the author feels.
