SAT Scoring

Scores on the SAT range from 200 to 800 in each subject, and the Writing score is composed of two sub-scores: the essay score and the multiple choice sub-score. The essay is graded by two graders from 1 through 6, giving a cumulative essay score in the range of 2-12. The lowest possible score for the test is therefore 600, and the highest possible score is 2400. Students generally receive their online score reports approximately three weeks after the test administration (six weeks for mailed, paper scores).

In addition to their score, students are informed of their percentiles (the percentage of other test takers with lower scores). The percentile rank indicates how you did relative to other students who took the test e.g. if your percentile rank is 80, it implies that you scored better than 80% of the test takers. The raw score indicates the total number of points gained from correct answers and lost from incorrect answers (ranges from -15 to just under 60, depending upon the test). Your raw score is the score obtained by adding up your points on all the answers that are correct, minus the points for those questions answered incorrectly. Questions you skipped are not counted and no points are subtracted for incorrect Student Response mathematics questions (grid-ins) on the SAT Reasoning Test. The following steps determine how the raw score is computed:

  • For each correct answer, add one point (+1).
  • For each wrong answer to a multiple choice question, subtract 1/4th of a point (-1/4) in case of a question with 5 choices, -1/3 for a question with 4 choices and -1/2 for a question with 3 choices.
  • Student Response questions: no points subtracted.
  • Each omitted question: no points subtracted.

The SAT deducts 1/4th of a point for every wrong answer to discourage completely random guessing. Scaled SAT scores are used to determine a student's percentile rank. The corresponding percentile of each scaled score varies from test to test-for example, in the following table a scaled score of 800 in all sections of the SAT Reasoning Test corresponded to a percentile of 99.99. Variations in the correlation between scaled scores and percentile ranks occur due to the varying difficulty of each test administration, and students' subjective performance on the test.
